I Must Not Have Been Paying Attention

Can someone please tell me when fancy thongs came into fashion? And if you know the answer to that, do you also know the answer to WHY? Because I just don't get it. I love me my flip flops like no other, but they're for ultra-casual days or when I need to run the garbage out to the dumpster and don't want to put on real shoes. They aren't for formal occassions.

Is it safe to assume you have a "No Man-dals" rule? A woman I know lives by that rule. Although gobs of people wear flip-flops to signify coolness, I couldn't take myself seriously if I did (though I was mocked last summer for wearing Tevas to a backyard party). Too many memories of being 8 years old and wearing them to the swimming pool or to the beach -- do people wear flip-flops for those purposes anymore?

I have a two pairs of casual flip-flops -- mostly for running to get the mail, playing with the dogs on the grass, etc. I would never think to weat them to the store. I do have two pairs of fancy sandals that are thong-like, but I would not call them flip-flops.

I did have to do a double-take when I read your first sentence, since I thought you were talking about undies, not shoes...
